Kerry MacNeil is a founding teacher leader at the Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School. She has taught English and has co-taught in science, history and math classes as an ESL teacher and has served as a team leader, a department chair and a division leader. Prior to her time at WHEELS, she served as a teacher and a staff developer at I.S. 143 and as an instructor at the New York City Writing Project at Lehman College. Kerry is a founding collective member of the Washington Heights Higher Education Project, a grassroots organization dedicated to making college admission and graduation a reality for first generation college students. Kerry has served on the educational advisory boards for the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Whitney Museum of American Art and Young Audiences, New York. Kerry received a B.A. in English and Medieval-Renaissance Studies from Wellesley College and a M.A. in Gender Studies and Feminist Literary Theory from the Graduate Faculty at the New School for Social Research. She is a Teach for America alumna. Kerry’s most recent musings on what it has been like to help open a school have been published by Teachers College Review (spring 2012) and in Sibling Rivalry Press (spring 2013). Kerry has taught twenty years, all of them in the same building.
